Catching Fish and Feeding Ducks

Tonight for Family Home Evening we went fishing at Farmington Pond with Dave and Patricia Golightly. The weather was perfect. We packed a picnic dinner and enjoyed the calm of the evening and colorful autumn leaves. Two unfortunate Rainbow Trout met their fate tonight.

Several geese and ducks call the pond "home" and expect to receive bread offerings from the fishermen who unwittingly wander into their territory. Erica and Christian started to feed them but soon realized that these particular birds had been fed many times before and had an "every bird for himself" mentality. The geese completely surrounded them in a loud, honking scrum that sent Erica and Christian on a life-saving sprint for the dock. Who knows what kind of long-lasting psychological scars they would have suffered had they fallen down in the melee before reaching the dock?

Also, we went to the symphony on Saturday evening. It was a Halloween performance called Halloween High-Jinks—Humperdink's Hansel and Gretel. The kids dressed up in their halloween costumes for the event. We gave Erica a symphony family pass for her birthday so we'll be enjoying performances through May 2009.

Abbie reeled in this monster. Look at the sheer size of that thing!
Feeding the ducks after they'd calmed down and lost the herd mentality.
We sat on the balcony at the symphony. Abbie liked the life-sized gingerbread cottage on stage.

I'm jealous of the symphony pass. What a wonderful idea!

Looks like everyone had a great time at the pond...even with the birds holding their own.

I've always wanted to go to the symphony. What a great present for Erica. The fishing looked like a lot of fun too.

what a great FHE activity. Nate is always wanting to go to the Symphony. When we were dating we went & saw them with John Denver. I know our kids would love to see them it's just finding the time to go. Glad you guys had such fun activities.
