High And Tight

Adam received a new hair cut last night. Or maybe I should say he inflicted a new haircut.

Just before home evening, dear Adam was at the kitchen table quietly doing his homework—a bit too quietly maybe, which should have tipped us off. His homework required him to use scissors—blunt tipped scissors, mind you. (I'm sure you see where this is going already.) Now, I'm not sure what was going through his kindergartener mind at the time, but I can tell you what was NOT going through his mind. He wasn't thinking, "If I cut my hair, I should do it in a place that won't be very noticeable." He also wasn't thinking, "And if I were to snip off some of my hair, I should just cut a little bit and not get very close to my scalp." No, he wasn't thinking any of these things. I know this because when we found him, he had a chunk of hair the size of Texas missing right in the middle of his bangs—cut right down to the scalp. Only a razor could have cut closer. Abbie had a laughing fit when she saw him. It is kind of funny now that I have some distance between me and the evening's offence. We had a talk with him about how he shouldn't act as his own barber. He felt true remorse. Especially when he realized he'd chosen the most conspicuous and obvious location for his first self-imposed haircut.

So Adam found himself on a stool in the kitchen recieving his "high and tight" haircut I mentioned earlier. It doesn't look too bad. It was salvageable. He's actually done us a favor. He'll use less shampoo and require less combing before he leaves for school in the morning. Abbie had another laughing fit when she saw his new hairstyle. Here he is sporting his new look.
This leads me to another stream of thought. I've always liked the illustrations of Robert McCloskey. He's won several Caldecott honors for his children's book drawings. One of my favorites is a book called Homer Price. McCloskey draws Homer with a nostalgic 1950s buzz cut. And for years in the Anderson home, this variety of haircut has come to be known as the "Robert McCloskey do." Below is an example.
Adam will be wearing his "Robert McCloskey" proudly for weeks to come.

I'm a fan of the high and tight. You can focus on his face and how beautiful it is.

He looks so much older I think. The haircut definitely suits him!

I think he looks great. I would have liked to see his cut before the buzz.

Tell Adam, it happens to the best of us at least once in a lifetime. You really should have shaved him bald, and glued on a beard....he'd be right in style...he, he..and Abbie would have lost it, for sure!!

He's still cute.

Where's his before shot? We all wanted to laugh, like Abby. You know, with Adam, not at him.

Sounds like an Anderson thing to do. Hey did he say to you - that he was just cutting the scissors in the air and his hair got in the way? Looks like the new cut works!

I'm with all the others...before pictures would have been worth seeing. At least he didn't cut Christian's hair or Abbie's.

I know. I know. What was I thinking in not getting a "before" shot? I guess in the heat of the moment I wasn't thinking clearly. I need an education in recognizing blog worthy moments as they happen in real-time.
Curses! Foiled again.
