At The Movies

We went to a movie today at the dollar theater in Kaysville. Actually, "dollar theater" is a bit misleading. It's not a dollar theater anymore. It's a two dollar theater now, which is still a bargain.

We saw "Planet 51." Was it good? Well, if you're 10 years old or younger you'll probably enjoy it. If you're older than that, "Fantastic Mr. Fox" will probably be more your style. (We only see kid movies lately)

The first time we went to this theater we found that there is a long-standing tradition that almost every audience member participates in before each movie. After the pre-movie trailers are shown but before the feature presentation, there is a video that looks like it was created in the 1970s. It shows the feet of two movie goers who proceed to litter the floor beneath their feet with popcorn, candy wrappers and even a chewed piece of gum. At the end of the movie, as they stand up to leave, one of them starts to lift his shoe off the ground and finds that he is stuck to the theater floor thanks to his sticky gum, like in the photo below.
At this point of the video, everyone in the theater yells at the screen, "EEEEWW!" And not just a polite show of disapproval "EEEEWWW"—we're talking a skewed mouth, furrowed brow, shake-the-rafters, united voice of true disgust. The first time we heard it, we were shocked at how many people participated in the ritual. However, on our subsequent visits to dear ol' Kaysville Theater we've found how much fun participating in the tradition can be. We are now devout members in good standing of the "EEEEWW!" club. It's quite therapeutic, really.
